A red-blue divide of historic proportions

As War Room noted earlier today, grieving Democrats sick of looking at an electoral map awash in red ink have options, thanks to the efforts of a team of physicists at the university of Michigan. There are now maps drawn in shades of purple, maps reconfigured to reflect population and maps that just look vaguely hallucinogenic.

But there's another contribution to the field of post-election cartography now making the rounds on the web: a comparison of last Tuesday's election results with the pre-Civil War divide between free states and slave states. That the two maps match up as closely that they do is eerie -- and says a bit about the roots of the culture war that many say contributed to Bush's victory.
