Director Ryan Coogler and composer Kris Bowers talk to Salon's D. Watkins about the "Star Spangled Banner" and why some Americans cling to its symbolism and others have no positive connections to it. It's all part of the conversation within their ambitious new film "Anthem." The documentary, available on #Hulu, is directed by Peter Nicks and produced by Coogler's production company, Proximity. It follows Bowers and #DJDahi on a road trip across America to connect with people who represent all genres of music — from country to the blues — in an effort to rewrite the anthem.
