Andrew McCarthy, the actor, director and travel writer, tells Salon about the 500-mile journey he took with his 19-year-old son Sam across Spain, which is at the center of his book "Walking With Sam." The trip along the Camino de Santiago, a Medieval pilgrimage that sees hundreds of thousands of hikers each year, allowed McCarthy to understand how to parent his adult child. "I left home at 17 and never looked back. My relationship with my father basically ended at that moment," he told Salon. "I didn't want to have that happen with my kids."
The "Brat Pack" actor also talks about reuniting with former co-stars like Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore and Ally Sheedy for the first time in over 30 years. And McCarthy shares why he's "shocked" to be 60 years old. "I was famous for having been young," he explained. "To suddenly be sort of the beginning of being old, I somehow missed the middle it felt like."
