Karine Jean-Pierre talks to Salon's Dean Obeidallah about her experiences growing up as a young immigrant in America, the importance of mental health awareness and her memoir "Moving Forward" in this December 2019 "Salon Talks" episode. On May 5, 2022, it was announced that Jean-Pierre would become the first Black queer woman to hold the position of White House press secretary. In 2019, Jean-Pierre opened up about the process of writing her memoir. "I talk about coming out when I was 16 to my mom,and that went really awful," she said. "I talk about that journey of my coming out in my sexuality. There was a lot of things going on in my young age. In the book, I talk about mental health and the importance of really dealing with that in a serious way and my journey of going to therapy and being more open about how I feel."
