Help keep Salon independent

Aparna Nancherla isn’t afraid to talk about failure and mental health in her comedy

Comedian Aparna Nancherla tells Salon why she embraces her failures and speaks honestly about mental health struggles in her work. "It's very complex to have a human brain," she said on this episode of "Salon Talks." Nancherla opens up about growing up in an immigrant family, the pressures of the "model minority" stereotype and why it was scarier for to keep her struggles to herself than to share them in her comedy. The "Unreliable Narrator" author also pushes back on the pressure for women of color to be exceptional, saying, "I feel like true equality is embracing mediocrity."
