Doyle Calhoun is a literary historian and scholar of suicide under colonization. His book "The Suicide Archive: Reading Resistance in the Wake of French Empire" will be published by Duke University Press this fall. It charts a long history of self-killing as political resistance and protest, from the time of slavery to the so-called Arab Spring.
