Three-time Emmy Award winner Margo Martindale joined "Salon Talks" to discuss the indelible characters she has played in films like "Million Dollar Baby" and television shows like
"Dexter," "The Good Fight,"
"Sneaky Pete" "and
"Justified." And as Claudia on
"The Americans," she's the KGB agent and scarf aficionado to watch out for in the show's final season.
But her most unexpectedly iconic part has been as herself - or more accurately, a bank robbing, two-dimensional version of herself - as "character actress Margo Martindale" on the brilliant
"Bojack Horseman." It's a role she was born to play, yet one she never saw herself in. When her former sitcom co-star Will Arnett told her that he wanted her for his new animated series, she told Salon's Mary Elizabeth Williams that she turned him down flat. But then, she recalls, "He said to me, 'You're going to come do my show… The part is Margo Martindale, character actress.' I said, 'I guess I have to.'" But she adds that she had one note after reading the script. "I said, 'I hate to tell you this, but the characters seem like animals.'"
