Tony and Grammy Award winner and original "Hamilton" cast member Daveed Diggs brings his latest project, a movie he co-wrote and co-stars in with his longtime friend, Rafael Casal, about their hometown Oakland, to "Salon Talks." "Blindspotting," a wild story about friendship, gets deep on racial tensions, inequality, and the ills of gentrification. The duo is hoping to spark real conversations, beyond the film, around when neighborhoods fall victim to gentrification. "We are in the clap-back generation and everything is a quick response and a move on and there aren't a lot of spaces for the conversation to incubate. One of those places that are available to us is a movie theater," Casal told SalonTV's D Watkins.
Diggs and Casal share what it was like to see Oakland transform before their eyes. "It's just financial capital, not cultural capital," Diggs said. "What we're trying to grapple with and I think a lot of cities are grappling with is like, is there a way to invest in a community that's been here and get returns."
