As Hollywood prepares for its biggest night and the Academy Awards turn 90, are we finally seeing a more exciting and representative list of nominees? Salon's Alyona Minkovski and Mary Elizabeth Williams discussed their predictions and the biggest themes of this year's Oscars on "Salon Talks." The Best Picture category is breaking new ground with the addition of horror-comedy "Get Out" and Greta Gerwig's "Lady Bird" as nominees, stepping away from a usually drama-heavy lineup. "I was actually, sincerely, without reservations, entertained," Williams said of many of the films. There were also some incredible performances by older women nominated for acting awards and a new wealth of complicated roles for them to play. Minkovski and Williams discussed #MeToo and the impact it has had on this awards show season.
