Should an actor's opinions on local and national politics remain separate from their work?

Former "Saturday Night Live" cast member Taran Killam, who played Donald Trump on the show before Alec Baldwin and opened up to NPR about the "shameful" time when then-candidate Trump hosted the show in 2015, explained to SalonTV why it's often hard to distinguish the two.

"It's an interesting thing, having a public career where you build up a following and fans and that's a lovely thing as that begets more work because the more people enjoy what you do, you get to do more of it," Killam told SalonTV's D. Watkins on "Salon Talks."

"But you never stop being a human being," Killam continued, "I don't make a concerted effort to blend the two. I try to remain conscious of how both may affect each other, but not letting that limit my expression as an American citizen or my expression as an artist."

Killam stars opposite Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish in the film "Night School," in theaters September 28, and in an upcoming ABC television comedy series "Single Parents," where he plays an overly involved single dad who hasn't been on a date in five years. The show premieres September 26.
