Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Jill Soloway joined Salon's Mary Elizabeth Williams to discuss how "Transparent" went from a revolutionary TV show to a culture revolution on gender. Their new memoir, "She Wants It: Desire, Power, and Toppling the Patriarchy,", out now, shares how they began to erase the lines on their own gender map.

A conversation with Soloway about gender identity and they see their own, quickly segued on the gender dynamics on Hollywood today that affects way more than who gets hired for a job.


"I had this reckoning over the past few years where I would look around at Hollywood and say, 'But we have so many liberal people in Hollywood. Every single person creating culture books, movies, TV, songs, is liberal. So how did we create this culture that elected Trump?'" Soloway told SalonTV's Mary Elizabeth Williams on "Salon Talks."

"Then," they say, I started to realize liberals haven't been making our stuff. White male liberals have. Creativity is a propaganda for the self. So white men, liberal as they are, have been making content that centers their reality and turns women, people of color, queer people, into objects. The otherizing that is still inherent when men create culture is a continued kind of patriarchy, even when coming from the left."
