Deborah Norville tells Salon how investigators were able to make a breakthrough in the Gilgo Beach murders, a serial killer cold case, which led to the July 2023 arrest of suspect Rex Heuermann. Heuermann is charged with murder in the killings of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello. In total, there are 11 bodies and police are still investigating their connections. Norville, anchor of "Inside Edition" and executive producer of Lifetime's "The Gilgo Beach Killer" has been following these murders on Long Island, New York for over a decade. Norville explains why the victims' stories played a big role in getting the public to pay attention and how rare it is to see a serial killer working in real time.
