David Simon, creator of HBO's "The Wire," talks to Salon's D. Watkins 20 years after the show first premiered in 2002. Simon tells the story of how the show made its way on the air, the production hurdles along the way and why he thinks the show broke new ground. Simon also talks about Baltimore 15 years after "The Wire" ended and why dirty cops became the center of his 2022 series "We Own This City" on HBO. "The policing only got worse and the drug war only became more oppressive," he said. "The quality and professionalism of the people coming into the police department is a generation removed from the people we were writing about in 'The Wire.'"
