For Amy Ryan, her starring role as Mari Gilbert in Netflix's "Lost Girls," which is based on the story of the Long Island Serial Killer, is about bringing humanity back to true crime stories. On "Salon Talks," Ryan explains why playing Gilbert, a mother searching for her daughter, who is a sex worker, revealed deep prejudices that victims face. "That just lit the fire inside her and she made it her mission to, not only make them do their job, but to bring the dignity and humanity back to the women who were also found as a result, other missing women," Ryan said.
"Lost Girls," available March 13 on Netflix and directed by Liz Garbus, is based on real events and Robert Kolker's best-selling book.
