When it comes to understanding the intricacies of foreign affairs, President Donald Trump is quick to dismiss his own intelligence team, who share decades of experience in the field. Whether they're being "too soft" on Iran or reminding us that ISIS has actually not been defeated, Trump repeatedly dismisses their expertise on Twitter, and has even recommended they "go back to school."
But with Trump prefering to go it alone, how would he handle an actual crisis, like say the Cuban Missile Crisis on the 1960s? Laurence Leamer, the New York Times best-selling author who has written about the Kennedys and has a new book "Mar-a-Lago: Inside the Gates of Power at Donald Trump's Presidential Palace,", talked to SalonTV's Dean Obeidallah about Trump's insistence that he knows more than his generals.
"He's incapable of really systematically exploring an issue," Leamer shared about Trump. "The Cuban Missile Crisis, it was 16 days and we know about that because they were secretly taping it, so we know what went on in those meetings. The first time I listened to it I thought, this is kind of strange, why isn't President Kennedy saying anything? He's just silent. And then I realized, of course he's silent because he's the guy that's got to make the decisions."
Leamer continued, "Everybody else in that meeting wanted to invade Cuba or to bomb it. Kennedy was the only one. He held back. Out of his immense knowledge he has in foreign affairs, he realized that we had these missiles in Cuba that were redundant. Can you imagine Donald Trump sitting down for 16 days, hours and hours after these meetings?"
Watch Leamer's full epsiode to learn how Trump's Russian ties trace back to real estate deals he led in Palm Beach, and how the behavior he learned at Mar-a-Lago paved the way for his abrasive and dismissive leadership style.
