How do dating apps protect their users from harassment? Attorney and author Carrie Goldberg details how an extreme harassment case originating from the popular gay dating app Grindr is shedding light on why tech companies need to be held accountable for the abuse its users face on their platforms.
Goldberg's client was being impersonated on the Grindr app by an ex-boyfriend who was using her client's photos. The ex-boyfriend would set up sex dates and give the client's address and location. "As many as 23 people came in a single day to his home to have sex with him," Goldberg told SalonTV's Mary Elizabeth Williams. Despite reaching out to Grindr 50 times, and going to the cops multiple times, the abuse still continued. Goldberg explained the legal action she is taking to fight for her client on "Salon Talks."
Goldberg pointed out how Grindr facilitates offline encounters that are "abused by rapists, by predators, by stalkers." "If you let it enter the stream of commerce without just the most basic ways to control it and protect your users who you're making money from, then you've designed a defective product and we're gonna sue the f**king bejesus out of you."
Goldberg's law firm, C.A. Goldberg, PLLC, focuses mainly on victims of abuse, rape, harassment and revenge porn on the internet and off. She's even representing two alleged victims of Harvey Weinstein. And in Goldberg's new book, "Nobody's Victim: Fighting Psychos, Stalkers, Pervs, and Trolls," she writes about her own experience with blackmail and harassment from an ex-boyfriend that inspired her law career today.
